English Version
The Damodara Lila is a famous Hindu story about the young Lord Krishna and his mother, Yashoda, which culminates in the appearance and liberation of two demigods, Nalakuvara and Manigriva, who had been cursed to be trees.
The Story of Damodara Lila and the Two Demigods
The lila (divine pastime) unfolds as follows:
Mother Yashoda’s Attempt to Bind Krishna: One day, after Krishna had been particularly mischievous (breaking a pot of butter and feeding it to monkeys), his mother, Yashoda, decided to tie him to a heavy wooden grinding mortar to punish him. She tried to bind him with ropes, but no matter how many she used, they were always two inches too short. This continued until she was exhausted, and out of compassion for her effort and love, Krishna finally allowed himself to be bound. This event gives Krishna the name “Damodara,” meaning “one who is tied with a rope around his belly”.
The Cursed Demigods: While bound to the mortar, Krishna noticed two tall arjuna trees in the courtyard of Nanda Baba’s house. These trees were actually two demigods, Nalakuvara and Manigriva, the sons of Kuvera (the treasurer of the demigods).
The Backstory: In their previous lives, Nalakuvara and Manigriva were proud and intoxicated by their wealth and beauty. They were once enjoying themselves naked with young girls in a garden when the great sage Narada Muni passed by. The girls covered themselves, but the demigods, in their intoxication, did not show proper respect. Cursed by Narada to become immovable trees, they were given the mercy that in 100 celestial years, they would be liberated by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krishna, and regain their true forms.
Liberation: To fulfill Narada’s prophecy, the child Krishna dragged the heavy mortar between the twin arjuna trees. The mortar became stuck, and when Krishna pulled with great strength, the trees fell down with a tremendous crash
Appearance of the Demigods: From the fallen trees emerged the two glorious figures of Nalakuvara and Manigriva, their bodies shining brightly. They immediately offered heartfelt prayers and obeisances to Lord Krishna, recognizing His supreme position and thanking Him for their salvation.
The Lesson: Krishna then blessed them with pure devotional service and they returned to their heavenly abode, liberated from the material existence and the curse.
The Damodara Lila teaches the power of pure devotion and that the Supreme Lord is bound only by the sincere love of His devotees, not by force or material opulence.
