దేవగురువు బృహస్పతి దేవతల విజయం, దానవుల అపజయం, లోకాలకు సుఖశాంతులు కలగా లని ఇంద్రుని చేత 175 దేవ సంవత్సరాలు చేసే శ్రీ రాజ రాజే శ్వరి మహాయజ్ఞం చేయించ సాగాడు. యాగం నిర్విఘ్నంగా జరిగింది. చివరి రోజుఅమ్మవారికి పూర్ణాహుతి ఇంద్రుడు అర్పించాడు.
యజ్ఞకుండంలో పూర్ణాహుతి అగ్నికి అర్పించగా నేమహాతేజస్సు ఒకటి అగ్నిగుండం నుండి వెలువడింది. ఆతేజస్సు దేవతలను ఉద్దేశించి “దేవతలారా! మీ యజ్ఞఫలం అమ్మవారుస్వీకరించి అనుగ్రహించింది.దేవకాలమానం అనుసరించి మరికొద్దిసేపటిలో బ్రహ్మదేవుడు నిద్రనుంచిలేస్తాడు. సృష్టికి భూమి కనపడక ఆందో ళనచెందుతాడు. మీరు వెళ్లి బ్రహ్మకు జరిగినది వివరించండి. బ్రహ్మ తో కలసి శ్రీహరిని ప్రార్ధించండి. నారాయణుడు దైత్య సంహారం చేసి భూమిని తీసుకు వస్తాడు. బ్రహ్మకు కొత్త దినము, మీకు కొత్త సంవత్సరం, సృష్టికి భూమి పై మరో నూతనకల్పము ఆరంభమౌతుంది. ఈకల్పము శ్రీమన్నారాయణుని అవతారము పేరిట ప్రసిద్ద మవుతుంది. లోకాలకు శుభం జరుగుతుంది” అని పలికి అదృశ్య మయ్యింది.
ఇంద్రాది దేవతలు అమ్మవారిని స్తుతులతో కీర్తించి యజ్ఞ ప్రసాదం స్వీకరించి బ్రహ్మలోకానికి పరుగు న వెళ్లారు. అప్పటికే బ్రహ్మకు మెలుకవ వచ్చింది. ప్రభాత సూర్యుని కిరణాలు అన్ని లోకా లపైపడివెలుగులునింపుతున్నాయి. మేలుకున్న బ్రహ్మదేవుడు చుట్టూ జలరాశిని చూసి ఆశ్చర్య పోయాడు. భూమికనిపించలేదు. భూమి లేకుండాజీవసృష్టిచేయడ మెలా అని ఆందోళన చెందాడు.
ఇంద్రాది దేవతలు వచ్చి బ్రహ్మ దేవునికి నమస్కరించి పితామహామీరు నిదురించిన సమయంలో హిరణ్యాక్షుడు భూమిని చెరబట్టి బంధించి సముద్ర గర్భంలో దాగి ఉన్నాడు. జగన్మాత శ్రీమన్నారాయ ణుడు మాత్రమే రాక్షసుని సంహరించి భూదేవిని రక్షించ గలడు” అని చెప్పి మీతో కలసి దేవదేవుని ప్రార్ధించి అనుగ్రహం పొందమని మార్గదర్శనంచేసింది” అని వివరించి చెప్పారు.
బ్రహ్మ ఇంద్రాది దేవతలు మనస్సు లలో శ్రీమహావిష్ణువును నిలుపుకుని చేతులు జోడించి నమస్క రించి “నారాయణా! నీవు మాత్రమే హిరణ్యాక్షుడి చెర నుంచి భూదేవి ని కాపాడగలవు. భూమి లేకపోతే సమస్త సృష్టి ఆగిపోతుంది. నీవు సదా దేవతలను,లోకాలను రక్షించి కాపాడుతావు. మా విన్న పాలు విని యోగ నిద్ర నుంచి మేలు కొనుము. పాహిమాం జగన్నాథా! రక్షమాం లోకనాథాశరణుశరణు!” అంటూస్తుతించారు, ప్రార్థించారు.
క్షీరసాగరంలో ఆదిశేష తల్పము పై యోగనిద్రలో ఉన్న శ్రీమహా విష్ణువు కర్ణాలకు (చెవులకు) దేవతల ప్రార్థనలు వినిపించి మేలుకొలిపాయి. శ్రీమహావిష్ణువు నాసికారంధ్రం (ముక్కు) నుంచి ఒక అంగుష్ఠ మాత్రపు శ్వేత వరాహం బయటకు వచ్చి క్షీరసాగరంలో పడింది. మరు క్షణం బ్రహ్మాది దేవతలు ముందు సముద్రం నుంచి పైకి లేచి దర్శన మిచ్చింది.
అంగుష్ఠ మాత్రం ఆకారంలో ఉన్న శ్వేత వరాహం చతుర్భు జాలతో శంఖ చక్ర గదా పద్మాలు ధరించి పట్టుపీతాంబరాలు ధరించి ఉంది. బ్రహ్మాది దేవతలు మొదట ఆ రూపం చూసిఆశ్చర్య పోయినా, తరువాత తమను రక్షించడానికి శ్రీహరే ఆఅవతారం ధరించి వచ్చాడు అని గ్రహించారు. ఓం నమోనారాయణాయ అంటూ పరిపరి విధాలుగా శ్రీహరిని స్తుతించారు.
దేవతల స్తుతిగానాలకుసంతుష్టు డైన శ్వేత వరాహం తన దేహ పరిమాణాన్ని క్రమ క్రమంగా విశాలంగా పెంచ సాగింది. దేవ తలు చూస్తుండగానే ఆకాశ మంత ఎత్తు తన రూపం విస్త రించిన శ్వేత వరాహం నాసికా రంధ్రాల నుంచి వేడి నిట్టూర్పులు విడుస్తూ భయంకరంగా ఘూర్జించింది. ఆవేశం ఆగ్రహంతో ఊగి పోతున్న శ్వేత వరాహుడి దేహ తాకిడికి సముద్ర జలాలు అల్లకల్లో లమై ఎగిసి పడసాగాయి.
ఆకాశంలో ఉన్న దేవతలను ఆ సముద్రపు అలలు ఎగిసిపడి తాకడంతో దేవతలు భీతి చెంది నారాయణ నామ జపం చేయ సాగారు. అందరు చూస్తుండగానే శ్వేత వరాహుడు పైకి ఎగిరి జలరాశిలో మునిగాడు. సముద్ర గర్భంలోకి ఘూర్జిస్తూ వేగంగా వెళ్ళి సముద్రపు అడుగున హిర ణ్యాక్షుడి హస్తాలలో బందీ ఐన భూమిని చూసాడు.
తక్షణం భూగోళాన్ని బంధించి పట్టుకున్న హిరణ్యాక్షుడి బాహు వుల పై పిడికిళ్లతో బలంగా కొట్టా డు. హిరణ్యాక్షుడు ఆ దెబ్బలకు సృహ తప్పాడు. హిరణ్యాక్షుడి చేతులు పట్టి విడదీసి కిందకు జారుతున్న భూమిని తన కోరలతో ఎత్తి నిలిపి తన భారి శరీరాన్ని సముద్ర గర్భం నుంచి లేపి నిలిచాడు. సముద్ర జలాలు వరాహుని, వరాహుని కోరల పై ఉన్న భూదేవిని అభిషేకిస్తు లేచి జారిపడి సముద్రంలో కలసి పోయాయి. అద్భుత దృశ్యాన్ని చూసిన దేవతలుశ్వేతవరాహుని కీర్తిస్తూ స్తుతించారు. భూగ్రహం రూపంలో ఉన్న భూదేవి స్త్రీ రూపం దాల్చి వరాహునికి నమస్కరించింది.
శ్వేత వరాహుని దెబ్బకు సృహ కోల్పోయిన హిరణ్యాక్షుడు తేరు కుని సముద్రం పైకి వచ్చి విశాల రూపుడైన శ్వేతవరాహుని, అతని కోరల పై నిలిచిన భూమిని, ఆకాశం నుండి కీర్తిస్తున్న బ్రహ్మ ఇంద్రాది దేవతలు, దేవర్షులను చూసి వచ్చింది దానవుల శత్రువైన శ్రీహరిగా తెలుసుకున్నాడు.
ఆవేశంతో గర్జిస్తూ “శ్వేత వరా హమా! దేవతా పక్షపాతివైన నారాయణుడివి నీవని తెలుసుకున్నాను. కనపడకుండాదాక్కున్న నిన్ను బయటకు రప్పించాలనే భూదేవిని చెరపట్టాను. శ్వేత వరాహ రూపంతో వచ్చావు. నిన్ను అంతం చేసి దానవ జాతికి మేలు చేస్తాను” అని వరాహుని పైకి అనేక అస్త్రశస్త్రాలు ప్రయోగించాడు. అవన్నీ వరాహుని శరీరం తాకి నీటిలో పడిపోయాయి. మరింత కోపంతో హిరణ్యాక్షుడు శ్వేత వరాహునితో ద్వంద్వ యుద్దానికి దిగాడు. శ్వేత వరాహుడు విశ్వ మంతా దద్దరిల్లిలా భయంకర గర్జన చేసి హిరణ్యాక్షుని పట్టు
కుని నిట్టనిలువుగా చీల్చి సంహరిచాడు. ఆకాశం నుంచి పుష్పవర్షం కురిసింది. దేవదుందుభులు మ్రోగాయి. గంధర్వులు పాడారు. అప్సరసలు ఆడారు. ఇంద్రాది దేవతలు జయ జయ ధ్వానాలు చేస్తూ వరాహ స్వామిని అనేక విధాలుగా స్తుతించారు. భూదేవి కృతజ్ఞతలు అర్పిస్తూ నమస్క రించి “ప్రభూ! నారాయణా! వరా హునిగా అవతరించి నా చెర విడిపించి నన్ను స్వీక రించావు. నీ సతినైన నేను ఇలా భూదేవిగా ఉండి అసురుల దురాగతాలు సహిస్తు ఉండ వలసినదేనానన్ను ఉద్దరించవా స్వామీ!” అని ప్రార్ధించింది.
శ్వేత వరాహుడు మహా విష్ణువుగా ప్రత్యక్షమై “దేవీ! చింతించకుము! ఇక నుంచి శ్వేత వరాహ రూపంతో నీకు క్షేత్ర పాలకుడిగా ఉండి నిన్ను రక్షిస్తాను. శ్వేత వరాహ స్వామి తనను భక్తి శ్రద్థలతో కొలిచిన జనులను తప్పక రక్షిస్తాడు.
నేను నీకు క్షేత్ర పాలకుడవటానికి గుర్తుగా నేటి నుండి ప్రారంభమైన కల్పము “శ్వేత వరాహ కల్పము” గా పేరు పొంది ప్రసిద్ది చెందు తుంది” అనిఅదృశ్యమయ్యాడు.
సర్వం శ్రీకృష్ణార్పణమస్తు
English Version
The Guru of the Devas, Brihaspati, began conducting the great Sri Raja Rajeswari Mahayajna, intended to last 175 celestial years, by Indra, with the aim of ensuring the victory of the gods, the defeat of the demons, and the prosperity and peace of the worlds. The Yajna proceeded without obstruction. On the final day, Indra offered the Purnahuti (final oblation) to the Divine Mother.
As the final offering was made to the fire in the sacrificial pit, a great radiance emerged from the flames. The luminous being addressed the Devas:
“O Devas! The Divine Mother has accepted and blessed the fruit of your sacrifice. According to the celestial time, Brahma Deva will awaken shortly from his sleep. He will be distressed upon finding the Earth missing for creation. Go and explain what transpired to Brahma. Then, join Brahma and pray to Sri Hari. Narayana will slay the demon and bring back the Earth.
A new day will begin for Brahma, a new year for you, and a new Kalpa (epoch) on Earth for creation. This Kalpa will be renowned and named after the incarnation of Srimannarayana. Auspiciousness will prevail in all worlds,” it said, and then vanished.
Indra and the other Devas lauded the Divine Mother with hymns, partook in the sacrificial offering, and hurried to Brahmaloka.
Brahma’s Anxiety
Brahma had already awakened. The rays of the morning sun illuminated all the worlds. Brahma Deva, upon waking, looked around and was astonished to see only water everywhere. The Earth was nowhere to be seen. He grew anxious, wondering how he could proceed with creation without the Earth.
Indra and the other Devas approached Brahma Deva, bowed, and explained: “O Pitamaha (Grandfather)! While you were sleeping, the demon Hiranyaksha seized the Earth, bound her, and is hiding deep within the ocean. The Mother of the Universe directed us, saying that only Srimannarayana can slay the demon and rescue Bhudevi (the Earth Goddess). She guided us to join you in praying to the God of Gods to seek his grace.”
Prayer to Sri Hari
Brahma, Indra, and the other Devas focused their minds on Sri Maha Vishnu, folded their hands in supplication, and prayed:
“O Narayana! Only you can save Bhudevi from the imprisonment of Hiranyaksha. If the Earth is lost, all creation will cease. You always protect and guard the Devas and the worlds. Hear our pleas and awaken from your Yoga Nidra (meditative sleep). Pahi Mam Jagannatha! Raksha Mam Lokanatha! Refuge, refuge!” they extolled and prayed.
The Shweta Varaha Incarnation
The prayers of the Devas reached the ears of Sri Maha Vishnu, who was resting in Yoga Nidra upon the serpent Adisesha in the Ksheera Sagara (Ocean of Milk), and woke him.
From the Narayana’s nostril (nasikārandhram), a White Boar (Shweta Varaha), the size of a thumb (angushtha mātra), emerged and fell into the Ocean of Milk. In the very next moment, it rose from the ocean before Brahma and the other Devas and gave them its audience.
The thumb-sized Shweta Varaha had four arms, bearing the conch, discus, mace, and lotus, and was clad in golden-yellow silk garments (Pittambarams). Although Brahma and the Devas were initially surprised by the form, they realized that Sri Hari himself had taken this incarnation to protect them. They hailed Sri Hari in many ways, chanting “Om Namo Narayanaya.”
The Slaying of Hiranyaksha
Satisfied by the hymns of the Devas, the Shweta Varaha began to gradually enlarge its size. While the Devas watched, the Boar’s form expanded to the height of the sky.
The Shweta Varaha roared fiercely, its loud sound reverberating throughout the universe, and exhaled hot breaths from its nostrils. The massive body of the Varaha, swaying with rage and fury, churned the ocean waters violently. The waves surged so high that they touched the Devas in the sky, causing them to fearfully chant the name of Narayana.
As everyone watched, the Shweta Varaha leaped up and then plunged into the waters. It descended quickly, roaring down into the ocean depths, and saw the Earth, which was held captive in the hands of Hiranyaksha at the bottom of the sea.
Instantly, it strongly struck the arms of Hiranyaksha, who was gripping the globe, with its fists. Hiranyaksha lost consciousness from the blow. The Varaha separated the demon’s hands, caught the sinking Earth with its tusks, and lifted its massive body up from the ocean floor. The ocean waters, which had risen to bathe the Varaha and Bhudevi on its tusks, receded back into the sea. Seeing this magnificent spectacle, the Devas praised and glorified the Shweta Varaha. Bhudevi, who was in the form of a globe, assumed her feminine form and bowed to the Varaha.
Hiranyaksha, recovering from the Shweta Varaha’s blow, rose to the surface of the ocean. Seeing the massive form of the Varaha, the Earth resting on its tusks, and Brahma, Indra, and the Sages praising it from the sky, he realized that this was Sri Hari, the enemy of the Danavas (demons).
Roaring with fury, he shouted, “O Shweta Varaha! I know you are Narayana, the partisan of the gods! I captured Bhudevi only to draw you out of hiding. You have come in the form of the White Boar. I shall destroy you and thus benefit the entire demon race!” He launched many weapons and missiles at the Varaha. All of them merely hit the Varaha’s body and fell harmlessly into the water.
With increased anger, Hiranyaksha engaged in a dual battle with the Shweta Varaha. The Shweta Varaha let out a terrifying roar that shook the entire universe, grabbed Hiranyaksha, and tore him vertically in two, thereby slaying him.
The Protector of the Realm
A shower of flowers rained down from the sky. Celestial drums (Devadundubhis) resounded. Gandharvas sang. Apsaras danced. Indra and the other Devas hailed the Varaha Swami with chants of victory and praised him in many ways.
Bhudevi expressed her gratitude and bowed, praying: “O Prabhu! Narayana! You incarnated as the Varaha, freed me from captivity, and accepted me. Must I, your consort, forever remain as the Earth, enduring the atrocities of the demons? O Swami, please uplift me!”
The Shweta Varaha manifested as Maha Vishnu and spoke: “O Devi! Do not worry! From now on, I shall remain in the form of the Shweta Varaha, serving as your Kshetra Palaka (Protector of the Realm) and guarding you. The Shweta Varaha Swami will surely protect those who worship him with devotion and reverence. As a mark of my service as your Protector, the Kalpa that begins today will be renowned and known as the ‘Shweta Varaha Kalpa’.”
Having said this, he disappeared.
