English Version
Ksheera sagara madhanam – or the Churning of the Ocean of Milk, is a Hindu myth where the gods (devas) and demons (asuras) churn the ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality (Amrita). To achieve this, they used Mount Mandara as a churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope, with Vishnu supporting the mountain in his Kurma (tortoise) avatar. The process released many treasures, including the goddess Lakshmi, and a potent poison that Lord Shiva drank to save the world.
The story of the churning
The catalyst:The devas lost their strength after a curse from the sage Durvasa.
Vishnu’s plan: Advised by Vishnu, the devas forged a temporary alliance with their enemies, the asuras, to churn the ocean of milk for Amrita, the nectar of immortality.
The process
They used Mount Mandara as a churning rod.
The serpent Vasuki became the rope, wrapped around the mountain.
Lord Vishnu, in the form of a tortoise, supported the mountain from the ocean floor.
The outcome:
The devas and asuras churned the ocean, which released a variety of treasures (ratnas).
The first item to emerge was a potent poison, from which the world was saved by Lord Shiva drinking it, turning his throat blue.
Later, the goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean.
Finally, Dhanvantari appeared with the pot of Amrita, the nectar of immortality.
After a conflict between the devas and asuras over the nectar, Vishnu’s Mohini avatar tricked the asuras into drinking poison instead of the nectar, while the devas drank the Amrita to become immortal.
